The Ice Storm of 1998

Northern New England and much of Eastern Canada got hit by an unusually severe ice storm that went on most of the week and finally ended the night of Friday, 9 January 1998.  The following pictures show some of the result.  Please note that these pictures are copyrighted

Climbing up icy tree This picture was taken the morning of 10 January 1998 in Crawford Notch, New Hampshire by the old train station.  We were milling around getting ready to hike up Mt Avalon.  Mike Hansen of the New Hampshire chapter decided to demonstrate for the camera how solid the ice was.

South Moat Mountain These pictures were taken on 11 January 1998 on a hike up South Moat Mt (at left) from Passaconaway Road to the south.  The blow downs were so severe in some places that we were essentially bushwhacking.  At one time we scouted around for 20 minutes to find where the trail went next.
